I believe Dr James P Allison should be regarded as the father of immunotherapy because of the following:

1980: He identified the T cell receptor protein responsible for T cell activation.

1990: He discovered that the CTL-4, a gene in T cells, was an inhibitory molecule that limit T cell responses.

1994: In mice, he discovered that antibodies against CTL-4 showed complete tumor rejection.

2005: Immunotherapy in humans was born with the debut of anti CTL-4 therapy.

Currently Dr James Allison is the Chair of Immunology at MD Anderson Cancer Center
