In the Nov Int J of Gyn Path Drs. Sakhdart, Moghaddam, and Liu have a very interesting article about endometrial samples in postmenopausal patients. Endometrial biopsies in postmenopausal patients frequently have only fragments of only the superficial endometrial glandular epithelium. This is a very common problem. Endometrial glands and stroma are not seen. And so we believe that the biopsy is insufficient. But according to these gynecologists, it is not possible to obtain more of the endometrium because the patients have an atrophic endometrium. Drs. Sakhdart, Moghaddam and Liu have written a very nice article demostrating that if the endometrial sample in a postmenopausal woman has more than 10 endometrial strips, the biopsy has a very strong predictive negative value.
